8.59

「天曰」下，二、天以事問，身子用理答。文為五：一天以事問、二身子以理答、三天辨不思議解脫相、四解釋、五結會。一、天以事問。「如何耆舊大智而默」者，即是問何故默然。二、身子用理答。默然者，正以見真諦理得解脫時，言語道斷無有言說。今不知所云，故默然也。此以理默答事默也。

From 'The goddess said' below: second, the goddess asks in terms of events, and Śāriputra replies using principle. The text has five parts: first, the goddess asks in terms of events; second, Śāriputra replies using principle; third, the goddess distinguishes the characteristics of inconceivable liberation; fourth, an explanation; fifth, a concluding integration. First, the goddess asks in terms of events. 'How is it that an elder of great wisdom is silent?'—this is asking why he is silent. Second, Śāriputra replies using principle. As for being silent, it is precisely because when one sees the principle of ultimate truth and attains liberation, the path of words is cut off and there is no verbal expression. Now not knowing what to say, he is therefore silent. This uses silence of principle to reply to silence of events.
