Question: When Śāriputra heard Aśvajit teach the three truths, he saw existence and attained the path, which was verbal expression. How can he now say that liberation has no verbal expression and that he does not know what to say? Answer: Existence is a teaching gate; how could it not be verbal expression? Here he replies in terms of realization, hence he says there is no verbal expression. Just as the Mahāsaṃnipāta explains that the monk Kauṇḍinya was the first to attain the principle without verbal expression, this too was attaining non-verbal expression by way of the gate of existence. Seeing existence and seeing emptiness are both teaching gates; the principle without verbal expression does not differ between existence and emptiness. If one were to say they differ, then since Śāriputra saw existence and attained the path, how could he say, 'I have heard that liberation has no verbal expression'?
