"Entering taverns, he was able to establish their resolve": his trace entered taverns. Alcohol has thirty-six faults: if ordinary people drink it, their spirits are clouded, the Way is confounded, and their supreme resolve all collapses. The Mahāsattva was able to establish his own resolve, and furthermore caused others to establish practice and causes without backsliding, leading them into the four lands. Furthermore, wine is afflictions, and the tavern is the five aggregates: ordinary people drink the wine of afflictions, the two vehicles drink the wine of emptiness and signlessness, and not yet having vomited this wine, they give rise to notions of impermanence regarding the buddha-nature. Thus the Mahā[parinirvāṇa] Sūtra says, "Holding the vase of the samādhi of emptiness, they are intoxicated by the signlessness of prajñā." The shared teaching is the same as the two vehicles; the distinct teaching has not completely seen the Middle Way, and is intoxicated by the wine of ignorance. Although the Mahāsattva also entered all afflictions, he used them to perform buddha-work; even if he drank a thousand jars, he was not confused or disordered—therefore it is said, "he was able to establish their resolve."
