二、約密解答釋，二：初、明密悟生土。「佛以一音」等者，荊溪云：應約密教一音異解，即通顯祕二不定也。橫解者，如前所引《法華》經文，秖於此土而覩上二，故小被斥，見淨不驚足指案地即其事也。縱對大竪說於小解仍橫，準其正理不聞為勝。

Second, answering and explaining in terms of the secret [teaching], which has two parts: first, clarifying secret awakening to rebirth in the land. As for "the Buddha with a single sound," etc., Jingxi says: "It should be understood in terms of the secret teaching of differing understandings from a single sound, which pervades both the explicit and the secret as the two indefinite [teachings]. As for horizontal understanding, as in the passage of the Lotus Sūtra cited earlier, right in this land seeing the upper two [lands], thus the small [vehicle] was reproached; seeing the pure without alarm when the toe pressed the earth is precisely such an event. Even if explained vertically to the great, to the small understanding it remains horizontal; judging by its correct principle, not hearing it is superior."
