Seven, contemplating the mind: Speaking broadly of the four lands easily generates attachment; not clarifying the contemplation of the mind leaves one increasingly distant from the Path. Therefore, one relies on phenomena to form contemplation so that cultivation is not done blindly. The text has two parts: first, clarifying mind and objects. Regarding 'the nature of the mind is... empty and quiescent,' Jingxi says: First establishing the nature of the mind as the quiescent light of principle. From 'Yet sentient beings...' onward, clarifying that through delusion regarding quiescent light they perceive the three lands, or losing the single truth they perceive the four truths, hence it says 'largely topsy-turvy,' etc. This generally clarifies the cause of their arising.
