Second, common and distinct, which has two parts: first, directly explaining, which has three parts: first, clarifying the subsumption of the three into two; second, from "Various sūtras..." below, explaining the names and meanings of the two prefaces; third, from "Now, because..." below, showing that the preface is established due to the name. Regarding "Due to the distinct name, there is a distinct preface": Jingxi says: "Just as due to Vimalakīrti's inconceivable name, there can be inconceivable events such as joining the canopies; and due to the word 'sūtra', there can be words such as 'Thus have I heard.'" Regarding "and in terms of practice and principle, common and distinct": if there were no practice and principle, why would one need this teaching? Moreover, without these three, the matter would be identical to Māra's speech; hence all sūtras possess these three as well as common and distinct, fully as in the Commentary and Subcommentary on the Lotus Sūtra.
