Second, from "Only the Buddha" down, showing the integration of Great and Small. Regarding "does not go beyond the partial and the complete": the "half-letter" and the "full-letter" are names from secular texts; the Tathāgata used them to illustrate the Small and Great Vehicles, as explained in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra. Regarding "between the withered and the flourishing": the Buddha entered nirvāṇa between the four withered and four flourishing trees, which precisely signifies that nirvāṇa and Buddha-nature are neither partial nor complete, while simultaneously illuminating both partial and complete, illuminating while negating and negating while illuminating. Thus, the Great and Small, the withered and the flourishing, are all the function of nirvāṇa; the function is identical to the essence, and in between one sees the nature.
