Second, the answer clarifying that both Great and Small possess them, in three: first, clarifying that the Great possesses the foundations of mindfulness. All the latter three teachings contemplate the foundations of mindfulness to attain the path. The foundations of mindfulness are merely contemplating the five aggregates; if separated from the five aggregates, there would be no object that could be contemplated. Mindfulness of the body is the aggregate of form; mindfulness of feeling is the aggregate of feeling; mindfulness of mind is the aggregate of consciousness; mindfulness of dharmas is the aggregates of perception and mental formations. From "If separated from" down, it points out that outside of the three teachings there is no separate Great Vehicle. Since all three teachings cultivate the foundations of mindfulness, if one asserts they are not needed, it definitely belongs to perverse views; what would it have to do with the Great Vehicle? Furthermore, the testamentary admonition of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] instructs monks after the [Buddha's] passing to rely on the foundations of mindfulness, universally covering everyone; how could it distinguish between Great and Small? Alas! In the world there are those who, without knowing the name and meaning of the foundations of mindfulness, call themselves followers of the Great Vehicle—how mistaken they are! Moreover, those who cling to the nominal characteristics of the Vinaya and do not cultivate the foundations of mindfulness are people who are all the farther removed from the path.
