二、徵釋，二：初、徵。問意者，荊溪云：恐不了者見不聞不聞，復云相盡，謂永不聞與聞相違，故須問之以生後答。此意欲顯二死聞盡、自在聞生。是故答中若相似盡能相似聞，若究竟盡能究竟聞。

Second, examining and explaining, in two parts: first, the examination. As for the intent of the question, Jingxi states: fearing that those who do not understand will see "neither hearing nor not hearing" and further state that characteristics are exhausted, supposing that permanently not hearing conflicts with hearing, it is necessary to question it to produce the subsequent answer. This intent is to show that the hearing of the two deaths is exhausted, and autonomous hearing arises. Therefore, in the reply, if it is an approximation of exhaustion, one can hear in approximation; if it is ultimate exhaustion, one can hear ultimately.
