Second, showing that abridgment was appropriate for this land. "Zhendan"—also Zhendan, Zhandan, or Zhinan—are all phonetic variations of the Sanskrit sound. According to the Huayan [jing], it is translated as the land of Han. Furthermore, in the Vibhāṣā there are two sounds: one says Zhina, translated here as the land of culture and letters, which praises this land as a land of capped and robed culture and letters. The second says Zhinan, translated here as borderland, which demeans this land as not being the Central Kingdom. The Records of the Western Regions translates Mahācīna as the Great Han country. Some say that because the sun rises in the eastern quarter and its color is like cinnabar (dan), it is called Zhendan or Zhendan; these are all erroneous explanations. "Deleting that" downward means that the Tripiṭaka masters who came from the west all excised and selected the essential meanings of the Sanskrit texts to translate and transmit them to this land; therefore, although the five translations differ, they extend only to two or three fascicles. "Selecting the overarching framework": when ten disciples and four bodhisattvas were ordered, the overarching framework was already complete. The detailed accounts of the five hundred and the eight thousand were deleted and not transmitted. To inquire about the illness merely says "immeasurable", and the lofty discussions preserve only a few sheets; all of these are instances of selecting the overarching framework. Dharma Master Yan of Zhaoti said: "This scripture did not arrive in its entirety. In the western lands it has five hundred fascicles, totaling one hundred thousand verses."
