Second, clarifying the causes for cultivating pure lands. Regarding "Asking why defiled [and pure] are so distinctly different," Jingxi says: Since their causes are identical, their fruits should not be different. Just as good causes in a defiled land yield the fruit of humans and devas, there are also the ten virtues in the various pure lands; why then are the retributions completely at variance with this land? In the intent of the reply, Jingxi says: The names are identical and the phenomena are identical, but the understanding is different and the vows are different. For instance, the good of cessation is one, but in relation to the good of cessation one additionally cultivates vows and practices, which causes the grades of the various lands to differ; the names of humans and devas are identical, but their meanings differ according to the land. Speaking of "the two places" is provisionally discussed in terms of the contrast between pure and defiled.
