Second, under "Regarding the text," explaining the text. Regarding "Upagupta," both the *Record of the Transmission of the Dharma Pitaka* and the *Aśokarāja-sūtra* state: "Gupta preached the Dharma in the kingdom of Mathurā. The Demon King rained pearl flowers, necklace flowers, and so forth at the site of preaching, transformed into a white elephant adorned with the seven jewels, and transformed into seven exceptionally handsome persons, so that the entire assembly watched them and no one listened to the Dharma. For three days he preached the Dharma and not a single person attained the Way, so the Demon King was delighted. Gupta immediately entered samādhi and observed this, knowing it was the work of the demon. The demon again placed a necklace upon the venerable one's head. Knowing this, he thought: 'The demon destroys the true Dharma; why did the Tathāgata not subdue him?' He then observed the Buddha's mind and knew that the Buddha wished me to subdue him. He immediately transformed the three corpses of a snake, a human, and a dog into a necklace, causing the Demon King to approach, and said to him: 'You gave me a garland, and I am deeply grateful for your generous gift; now I return this to present it in recompense to you.' The demon was greatly delighted, stretched out his neck, and received it. When it reached his neck, it turned back into dead corpses, with worms and maggots about to crawl out. The demon was deeply disgusted and said to Gupta: 'Why do you now tie these dead corpses around my neck?' The demon, using his spiritual powers, could not remove them. He pleaded with the devas, and even with King Brahmā, seeking release from these corpses. King Brahmā said: 'This was done by a disciple of the Ten-Powered One; I cannot remove it. If you take refuge in Gupta, you may perhaps obtain release.' The demon accepted Brahmā's instruction, went to Gupta's place, and threw his whole body to the ground, seeking release from the three corpses. The venerable one said: 'Do not cause harm to the true Dharma, and then I will release them for you.' The demon said: 'I accept your instruction.' He immediately released them for him." Regarding "being a signless Buddha," this means his virtue was equal to a Buddha's, only lacking the marks and signs. This is merely a term of praise.
