Second, from "if one delights" onward, he retroactively explains those of new learning, which has two parts: first, he directly explains the faculties. Regarding "milk watered down," the *Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra*, "Bodhisattva Chapter," states: "Like a cowherd woman who, wishing to sell milk and greedy for greater profit, added two parts water and sold it on to another cowherd woman. That woman having received it added two parts again and sold it on to a woman near the city. That woman added two parts again and sold it to a woman inside the city. That woman added two parts again and went to the market to sell it." Ancient masters explained that the two cowherd women are metaphors for those who propagate the sūtras: a female nature is crooked and flattering, which is a metaphor for propagators being unable to set aside self-interest for the sake of the Dharma and flattering the masses for profit; hence they are compared to cowherd women. Adding two parts the first time means: first, abridging this sūtra; second, dividing it into many parts. Adding two parts the second time means: first, removing deep and subtle words; second, inserting words of worldly truth. Adding two parts the third time means: first, excerpting what comes before and putting it behind; second, excerpting what comes behind and putting it before. Adding two parts the fourth time means: first, putting what comes before and after into the middle; second, putting what is in the middle before and after.
