Second, the Tathāgata's reply, in two [parts]: First, section division. Second, commenting according to the text, in four [parts]: First, praise and permission. Second, admonition to listen. Regarding "mindfulness of it generates wisdom born of cultivation," Jingxi says: Being mindful of the object upon which the prior hearing and reflection relied, one should cultivate practice according to hearing and reflection. Extending to the four teachings and corresponding to this Vaipulya, therefore, after hearing, one must proceed to reflection and cultivation. Even Confucian texts say, "Learning without reflection is labour lost," and, "Cultivate the person and be cautious in conduct, lest you disgrace your ancestors." What mundane teachings discuss as reflection and cultivation are both shallow, having only the names without worldly-transcending reality. Third, receiving the teaching. Fourth, the proper reply, in two [parts]: First, section division.
