Second, explaining suffering, which has two parts: first, directly explaining the gate of suffering, which has two parts: first, repeating the present text and directly explaining it. The 'three sufferings' are the suffering of suffering, the suffering of deterioration, and the suffering of conditioned existence. The 'eight sufferings' are, in addition to the four sufferings of birth, etc., the meeting with the hated, separation from the beloved, not getting what one seeks, and the five flourishing aggregates. The 'nine vexations': Daoxian says, 'First, vexing me; second, vexing those dear to me; third, praising my enemies.' It is thus for each of the three times, so together they make nine.
