Fourth, retributive awe. "Troublesome enmities": Jingxi says: "Because they are most able to exhaust and burden me." "Māras refers to the four Māras..." and so forth: encompassing both within and outside the realm. "Able to harm..." onwards: causing the three truths and the three wisdoms to fail to develop. When the middle wisdom does not develop, it is called harming the mother of the perfection of wisdom; when the two wisdoms do not develop, it is called harming the father of skillful means; causing auxiliary path-factors to fail to be completed is called harming Dharma kin. When both the direct practices and the auxiliary factors are harmed by Māra, they are called "troublesome enmities." The bodhisattva's subduing of them is like avenging enmity. As the "Quli" says: "With the enemy of one's parents, one does not live under the same sky; with the enemy of one's brother, one does not share the same state; with the enemy of one's associate, one does not lay aside weapons." Māra's harming of the two wisdoms, provisional and real, is the bodhisattva's parents' enemy. Harming the kin of good Dharmas is the enemy of brothers and associates. Therefore, employing the weapons of the powers and fearlessnesses to subdue them is called "avenging enmity." The character "enmity" (怨) is in the level tone; in the Analects, "repaying enmity with uprightness," the character is written this way. The Shuowen writes it as "冤", composed of [the radicals for] net and hare. Jingxi says: "Therefore, harming the parents of the perfection of wisdom and skillful means is harming all provisional and real [dharmas] within and without. As for what can harm the provisional and the real, nothing surpasses the heavenly Māras and outsiders within and without. Hence, for those who can subdue them, their power is called great."
