Third, appointing Kāśyapa, in two parts: first, dividing into headings and stating the idea. 'Dhūta' is translated here as 'shaking off', because it shakes off afflictions. The *Suvikrāntacintidevaputra-paripṛcchā Sūtra* says: 'Dhūta means shaking off greed, anger, ignorance, the three realms, and the six sense entries.' Jingxi says: 'Appointing Kāśyapa next: Śāriputra has already been reproached in terms of the fruit, and Maudgalyāyana has furthermore been reproached in terms of the cause; now in this passage, he is reproached in terms of the cause together with the fruit. Drawing upon the great cause and fruit, he reproaches his small fruit; drawing upon the small cause and fruit, he demonstrates his great teaching. The great cause is demonstrating the gate of begging for food. The great fruit is demonstrating the Dharma of correct eating. The small cause is the truths of origination and the path. The small fruit is the truth of cessation. The great teaching is the Sudden Teaching.'
