三、正述被訶,二:初、分科。二、隨釋,三:初、總訶,二:初、正釋。「非唯至小益」者,荊溪云:說小法相被彼大機,故俱失二,故總訶之云不當如仁者所說。此中當字,平聲呼之,意明所說不當故也。若去聲呼,須以當字而為句末,故不可也。
Third, directly recounting being reproached, has two parts: first, dividing the sections; second, explaining in sequence, which has three parts: first, a general reproach, which has two parts: first, properly explaining. Regarding "not only... to little benefit," Jingxi says: expounding the aspects of the lesser Dharma to match those great capacities, both are lost; hence the general reproach says that it should not be as the benevolent one has expounded. Here, the character *dang* is pronounced in the level tone, meaning to clarify that what was expounded was not appropriate (*bu dang*). If pronounced in the departing tone, the character *dang* would have to be at the end of the phrase, so that is not acceptable.
