Third, from "If" onward, revealing the function of the principle. Regarding "If one can" and so forth, Jingxi says: "Again, extinguishing the core of the mind reveals the eminent efficacy of repentance." "Seeing the principle" refers to seeing the principle of the unproduced. Regarding "phenomenal nature" and so forth: 'phenomenal' refers to the transgressions of violating unmanifest [restraint]; 'nature' refers to natural transgressions [per se]; 'fundamental' refers to transgressions of fundamental delusive afflictions. These three transgressions are what were broken by the preceding three repentances. Therefore, Jingxi says: "Phenomenal corresponds to the phenomenal repentance, nature corresponds to contemplating the signs, and fundamental corresponds to the repentance of the unproduced." The mind of transgression is the mind; this is the root of transgression. One who can penetrate this mind will forever forget the root. Furthermore, 'seeing the principle' means that greed and the rest are unproduced; this breaks the mind's graspings by means of principle. Thus, these graspings of the mind universally obstruct the three kinds of repentance. Among the three kinds of repentance, the unproduced is foremost. If grasping arises within the unproduced, transgressions are not even extinguished, so how could grasping arise in the first two?
