Second, correctly explaining. Third, the metaphors, divided into two: first, correctly explaining the meaning of the metaphors. Regarding "the three kinds of inclinations and desires": desiring to manifest the principle, desiring to arouse wisdom, and desiring to cultivate practice. Regarding "desiring to manifest the dharmakāya," etc.: Jingxi states: "Wisdom is that which walks, and the way is that which is trodden; hence we know that what is trodden is true reality itself. Thus we know that the great way is also trodden by the small [vehicle]; the small vehicle merely grasps the true truth within it, and therefore uses that which walks to manifest the great way that is walked." Regarding "desiring to cultivate," etc.: practicing the great arises from the mind, the great mind guides practice, and all good deeds return to it; this is the conditioning cause, which is why it is concluded below as liberation. From "If it is said" onward prevents a tacit objection. Fearing a tacit objection saying that seeing the true is not different, the text immediately raises a metaphor to preclude it, saying "Do not...", etc., and thus distinguishes them by five meanings. The five meanings are: first, the difference between an insect and a jewel, because true and middle differ; second, resting or not resting, because of being ultimate or not ultimate; third, many versus few, having within and beyond the realms; fourth, for oneself and for others, dividing into fabricated and unfabricated; fifth, beneficial or unbeneficial, the near and far of conversion. "The jewel's light" refers to the palace of the sun being formed of two jewels. "A firefly": the Yi tong gua yan says, "At the beginning of autumn, decaying grass transforms into fireflies." The Guangya says, "Jingtian, firefly, and phosphor [are synonyms]."
