Question: "The first three eyes can also be attained by the two vehicles of the two teachings. The Dharma eye can also be attained by bodhisattvas of the three teachings. Why are all five eyes stripped away and said to be lacking?" Answer: According with teachings and relying on principle, their characteristics are vastly different. If we speak of what all Buddhas and bodhisattvas see, it is the four eyes imbued with principle; partially attained at the stages and abodes, only a Buddha realizes them completely. Hence the physical eye at one time sees universally throughout the ten directions; the divine eye sees without dual characteristics; the wisdom eye is said to be the foremost pure; and the Dharma eye and Buddha eye have always been eternally distinct. Therefore the text does not differentiate them further, as they have already been fully distinguished in the preceding text. If so, and all five belong to the Buddha, how do they form five distinct [eyes]? Answer: That is not so. In the case of all Buddha Tathāgatas and dharmakāya bodhisattvas, their functions are distinguished according to their substance, and their five characteristics are not the same. For instance, the physical eye sees coarse form, and right where coarse form is, it sees the middle way. From the perspective of coarse form, it is named the physical eye; in terms of seeing the middle, it is named the Buddha eye. Therefore, the seeing of form is called its function, while the Buddha eye directly corresponds to the substance of the middle way. The remaining three eyes are explained analogously as above. If, as in the first explanation, we speak inclusively, the two vehicles are only blind to the Dharma and Buddha eyes; now, speaking from the standpoint of deprivation, they are blind to all five. Moreover, looking from the perspective of the five eyes of the Buddha stage, even bodhisattvas are deprived of them, how much more so the two vehicles? The one-eyed state in the Lotus Sūtra is still discussed from an inclusive standpoint.
