Third, Jingming enters samādhi like the bhikṣus. Jingxi states: "Borrowing the wisdom of past lives. 'Borrowing' is named so because this is used to assist that. Now, since Jingming abides in the immaculate stage, why would he need to enter samādhi and only then know? Now he displays the appearance of entering to let the bhikṣus know, thereby causing the bhikṣus to feel gratitude and pay respect. Regarding 'at the places of five hundred Buddhas': since they had already forgotten in the interim, whether based on the beginning of the five hundred in the Lotus Sūtra or based on the present Buddha, if according to the Great Sūtra, after four Gaṅgās, five hundred Buddhas' places is truly not many. Although there are no words about dust-motes or the designation of a single Buddha's name, now that they obtain benefit from Jingming, one should know that Jingming may have been their original associate, teacher, or disciple. Could it not be that Jingming also helped arouse them at the five hundred [Buddhas]? Not a single sentence of benefit is ever in vain. Therefore, the conversion rituals of all the sages are sometimes solitary, sometimes collective, sometimes concurrent, and sometimes direct, precisely because past [causes] were not the same."
