Second, from "However, Mai[treya]..." downward concludes and indicates the settled meaning, in two parts: First, concluding with Maitreya's conforming to capacities. Jingxi says, "How could one measure the high and the low?" He may be an ancient Buddha from the distant past, difficult to fathom. Regarding "having conditions of four capacities": Question: The preceding text already said that he submerged the real and employed the provisional; now that he conforms to the four conditions, then provisional and real are both employed—why is that? Answer: What was previously called provisional does not mean exclusively provisional; therefore, because within the Perfect Teaching those who lose the purport and so forth—the other three—must also be reproached. Hence, even granting the stage of the three non-retrogresions of the Perfect Teaching, [Vimalakīrti] only reproaches Maitreya, while the others retract their traces. Second, from "Now..." downward shows Jingming's settled meaning.
