Second, according to the eight māras. Regarding "the Tripiṭaka up to subduing the four māras": these are the deviant permanence, bliss, self, and purity. Regarding "the perfect [teaching] refuting the eight māras": the two extremes are the demons of the middle. They are refuted without being refuted within the Buddha-realm; this is called perfect refutation. As for why all eight are called māras: *māra* means killer; permanence and the others kill the good of the true truth, while impermanence and the others kill the good of the middle way. Therefore, although those from the first abode upward have partially verified true permanence, their ignorance is not yet exhausted and transformational [birth and death] still remains; hence the four, such as impermanence, reach their extreme at the final mind.
