二、用四教格義，二：初、約四教結判。「若以三慈用收四教」者，前三但有生法，圓教則具無緣。荊溪云：四教皆云與道滅樂，不云拔苦集者，且消慈邊未即拔苦。圓慈之體理無獨運，若從事說不無二別，故與樂言一途而已。

Second, evaluating the meaning using the four teachings, in two: first, concluding and judging with respect to the four teachings. "If using the three kinds of benevolence to subsume the four teachings": the first three possess only [benevolence toward] sentient beings and dharmas; the perfect teaching is fully endowed with [benevolence] without conditions. Jingxi says: That the four teachings are all said to grant the joy of the path and cessation without mentioning eradicating suffering and origination is for the moment parsing the benevolence side, not yet eradicating suffering. As for the essence of perfect benevolence, in principle it never operates in isolation; yet speaking from the perspective of phenomena, there are not without the two distinctions, so the expression "granting joy" is merely one approach.
