Third, from "Question: Does it not reach increase?": in two parts: first, citing phenomena. Second, from "Jingming" downward, expressing the Dharma, in two parts: first, sequentially showing the meaning according to the lands. As for "Sunakkhatta and Devadatta": the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, "Kāśyapa Chapter," says: "Although Sunakkhatta recited the twelve divisions of the canon and attained the four dhyānas, he drew close to evil friends, retrogressed from the four dhyānas, gave rise to evil false views, and said there is no Buddha, no Dharma, and no nirvāṇa. Sunakkhatta is now near the Nerañjarā River. The Buddha and Kāśyapa went together to that place. Sunakkhatta, seeing the Buddha coming from afar, gave rise to an evil mind, and in his living body fell into Avīci Hell." Devadatta's falling into hell is as recorded before. As for "Śrīgupta": the Zhuangyan lun clarifies that the elder Śrīgupta was commissioned by non-Buddhists to kill the Buddha; he mixed poison into the food and invited the Buddha to eat. The Buddha knew it, and ordered Ānanda to chant the saṃghabhatta before eating; after it was chanted, the poison dispersed. As for "a person who regresses from the Dharma": this is an arhat who regresses from the Dharma, who upon encountering conditions regresses to become a first-fruit [noble one]. As for "Yet the three vehicles up to can also have three": Jingxi says: The stages of the five persons are distinct and the teachings they receive are different, hence they are called sharp and dull. As for those who have attained non-retrogression of stage: if according to the three lands one explains the three non-retrogressions, within that land there are still two retrogression [types]: if breaking [the delusions of] dust and sand, one attains non-retrogression of practice; if breaking ignorance, one attains non-retrogression of mindfulness, which is entering [the land of] fruition reward. Fruition reward is entirely non-retrogression of mindfulness, how much more so the other two! Being so according to lands, it can be known from the stages. As for "all are diminution-diminution": if stated thus, the [land of] expedients should also only have diminution-diminution; the text merely borrows the meaning of the two kinds of retrogression to name them diminution-increase; in reality, they cannot further become an increasing illness. As for "or establishing three clauses according to the meaning of entering and emerging from contemplation": Daoxian says: Entering contemplation is increase-diminution; emerging from contemplation is diminution-increase; entering with no further emergence, directly reaching non-retrogression of mindfulness, is named diminution-diminution.
