Second, under "therefore the Great [Sūtra]," citing the scripture to examine and explain, which has two parts: first, citing the scripture to briefly indicate. Second, under "question," examining and explaining by means of analogy, which has two parts: first, the investigative question. Jingxi states: Regarding 'the lodestone is distinct from attracting,' at a glance the two lines show no difference, but upon closely seeking the intention of the text, there is a subtle distinction. First asking whether the lodestone is distinct from attracting intends to ask: does the substance of dharma have nothing to do with function? Next asking whether attracting is distinct from the lodestone intends to ask: does the function of dharma have nothing to do with substance? Substance is the dharmakāya; function is the illness of compassion.
