Second, consoling according to the Distinct Teaching, which has two [parts]: first, narrating the intention and dividing the headings. Second, from "First explaining..." downward, explaining the meaning following the text, which has five [parts]: first, exhorting to arouse a compassionate mind; second, exhorting to make vows to bring benefit; third, exhorting to cultivate blessings and wisdom. From "As in the Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa" downward, departing from the four and five wrong [livelihoods] is therefore called right livelihood. Regarding the four wrong [livelihoods], the fourth [fascicle] of the Mahāprajñāpāramitōpadeśa says: "Monastics who compound medicines, plant crops and trees, and practice other impure livelihoods are called 'eating with downward mouth.' Looking at constellations, sun, moon, wind, rain, thunder, and lightning as an impure livelihood is 'eating with upward mouth.' Flattering the powerful, acting as emissaries in the four directions, and seeking much with artful words as an impure livelihood is 'eating with square mouth.' Various incantations and divination of fortune and misfortune, minor improper arts, are called 'eating with the four corners mouth.'" Regarding the five wrong livelihoods: first, displaying extraordinary signs to seek material gain; second, speaking of one's own virtues for material gain; third, divining fortune and misfortune to preach for others; fourth, speaking in a loud voice and manifesting authority to cause people to revere and fear; fifth, speaking of offerings received to move people's hearts. These are all things that those of high fame and elevated status must caution against, and should not be peeked at by degenerate followers of meager virtue. Regarding "If one does not attain..." and so forth, Jingxi says: Not only does one depart from the four and five wrong livelihoods, but it directly reveals abiding in the wisdom-life of the four teachings. Fourth, exhorting to generate a valiant mind. Jingxi says: That is, the Śūraṅgama mind; the valiant mind that enters the conventional is called the valiant mark. Fifth, exhorting to make vigorous progress without backsliding.
