Second, for the sake of gathering them in and guiding them into the threefold contemplation. Third, for the sake of supporting and completing the teaching of the pure land. Jingxi says: As for "according to the degree to which hindrances are exhausted," hindrances are past-life hindrances. Hindrances necessarily possess the three [kinds]; because within the [land of] common residence, the pure and defiled are divided, therefore regarding hindrances one must divide them into three, which is not the same as condition-assemblage having merely three kinds. If people of the two vehicles have already entered the stages, they may also be expounded to according to the manifest teaching, and one must also say that it causes those who manifestly enter the stages to achieve the raw curds. In the fourth intention, "serving as a prelude for what follows" refers to those who are respectively born in the pure lands, fully as in the preceding text in the "Buddha Land Chapter."
