二、破古顯今，二：初、問。荊溪云：五源八始者，古人意云〈問疾〉一品因於文殊至淨名室，除去所有，為下五品之源本也。「八始」者，至〈法供養〉猶是正經，故〈問疾〉初為下正經八品之始。

Second, refuting the ancients to reveal the present, in two: first, the question. Jingxi says: Regarding the "five sources and eight beginnings," the ancients meant that the single chapter "Inquiring After the Illness," because Mañjuśrī came to Jingming's room and cleared out everything, serves as the root and source of the five chapters below. Regarding the "eight beginnings," up through "Dharma Offering" is still the main scripture; hence the beginning of "Inquiring After the Illness" serves as the beginning of the eight chapters of the main scripture below.
