三、化他功大。荊溪云：十方等者，義通橫竪。八方橫也，即是同居淨穢二土；上下竪也，即是有餘果報二土。荊溪此釋，一往言也。今謂十方是橫，義必包竪，以不離同居有三土故，如《法華．壽量品》。

Third, the merit of transforming others is great. Jingxi says: Regarding "ten directions," etc., the meaning applies to both horizontal and vertical. The eight directions are horizontal, which are the defiled and pure lands of Shared Dwelling; above and below are vertical, which are the two lands of [Expedient Means] with Remainder and Real Reward. This explanation by Jingxi is a preliminary statement. We now say that the ten directions are horizontal, but their meaning necessarily encompasses the vertical, because without leaving Shared Dwelling the three lands are present, as in the "Lifespan Chapter" of the *Lotus Sūtra*.
