2. From 'Now the Perfect' down, revealing what is correct, in two: first, broadly taking the cause of the Perfect [teaching]. 'Setting forth the carriage': zhen means a carriage. The Wen Xuan says: 'Setting forth the carriage within the clear Luo.' 'The Great River of Golden Sand': in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, because the Buddha preached that all rivers must have bends and curves, Mañjuśrī thereupon challenged him. The Buddha said: 'In this trichiliocosm there is an islet named Nigrodha; on that islet there is a river, straight without bends, named Sahā, like a straight plumb-line entering straight into the western sea.' Now the bends and curves of the rivers illustrate the previous teachings, while the golden sand entering straight illustrates the contemplation method of the Perfect and Sudden, wherein obstacles are themselves virtues, like entering straight into the sea.
