Third, explaining the mind of the Great Vehicle. Regarding "That is, the Great Vehicle of the four teachings, etc.," Jingxi says: "Question: In the previous distinctive explanation, the Great Vehicle is solely in the separate and perfect [teachings], while the two minds of straight and deep are solely in the two vehicles; how is it that in this passage it extends to all four? Answer: The former was distinct and this is common; such is the logical necessity. Therefore, although there are five explanations in each common explanation, within the Great Vehicle the worldly is further excluded, which can be seen upon reflection." I now state: straight and deep minds exist in the worldly realm, but the designation 'Great Vehicle' exists only in the supramundane; hence the Commentary's explanation of the Great Vehicle speaks only of the four teachings. Furthermore, one should know that although by analogy there are five explanations, this Great Vehicle here, viewed in relation to the preceding two minds, completely excludes the worldly and partially excludes the other two, because the Great Vehicle of the Piṭaka and common [teachings] is not the two vehicles, unlike the straight and deep [minds] which are framed merely in terms of the three vehicles. From "Seeking above" downward, explaining its name. 'Great' takes encompassing breadth as its meaning; since the bodhisattvas of the four teachings both seek the Buddha fruit above and transform sentient beings below, encompassing above and below, their greatness and breadth are clear. The two vehicles deliver themselves, possessing neither seeking nor transforming; the meaning of encompassing breadth is violated, hence they are called small. From "Each conditions" downward, 'vehicle' takes conveying as its meaning; giving rise to vows based on objects and cultivating practice to fulfill vows, conveying oneself proceeds from cause to fruit, while conveying others delivers them from the ordinary into the noble; conveying both self and other, the meaning of 'vehicle' consists in this.
