Second, clarifying the incidental inclusion of the two vehicles. Regarding "Question: In this..." and so forth, Jingxi says: The sūtra text merely says straightforward mind and deep mind, which as explained above are both the fundamental substance of the bodhisattva's practice and vows. If in analyzing the text the pure land has no mind of the two vehicles, this is falsely adding the words "two vehicles." The meaning in the answer is: merely saying straightforward and deep without saying two vehicles is because, since it carries expedient means, it does not state it explicitly. Thus, to say "two vehicles" would obstruct the great; to say "bodhisattva" would obstruct the small; since the intention contains both, it merely says "straightforward and deep." Regarding "judging by parallel," Jingxi says: In the present sūtra, these words harbor a covert purport and could not be immediately practiced and explicitly stated. In this assembly, the source of the overt function of the two vehicles are all people cultivating the pure land; hence we know that the bodhisattva cultivating the practice of the two vehicles is a method for gathering living beings. If one wishes to speak explicitly, one must rely on the intention of the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā and Lotus sūtras.
