Eighth, manifesting entry into brothels. Kumārajīva states: 'In a foreign land there was a woman whose body was golden in color. There was an elder's son named Dharmottara who offered a thousand ounces of gold to invite her into a bamboo grove, and they rode off together. Mañjuśrī transformed himself halfway along the road into a layman wearing jeweled garments of great magnificence. Seeing him, the woman gave rise to covetous desire within. Mañjuśrī said: "If you wish to obtain these clothes, you must generate the bodhicitta." The woman said: "What is bodhicitta?" He replied: "Your very body is it." She asked: "How can it be so?" He replied: "The nature of bodhi is empty, and your body is also empty; it is for this reason." This woman had formerly planted roots of goodness under Kāśyapa Buddha and cultivated wisdom; upon hearing this explanation, she immediately attained the tolerance of non-arising phenomena. Having attained the tolerance of phenomena, intending to demonstrate the fault of desire, she went back with the elder's son into the bamboo grove. Having entered the bamboo grove, she manifested her body dying, swelling up, rotting, and foul-smelling. When the elder's son saw this, he was filled with great fear. He went to the Buddha, who preached the Dharma to him, and he also attained the tolerance of phenomena. Demonstrating the fault of desire yields benefits such as this.' Sengzhao states: 'In foreign lands, courtesans established separate settlements, upon which men of refined rank would not cast so much as a glance. Yet the Great Being shared their desires and then demonstrated their faults.' 'Nine apertures' refers to the two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, the mouth, and the passages for feces and urine. These nine places constantly discharge impurities; what is there to delight in? 'The arising of the four roots of goodness' means that the capacities for the four teachings have matured. From 'if covetous' below, it means giving rise to attachment toward the dharmas of the four teachings. From 'hence the lower text' below, the first line verifies entering brothels, and the following line verifies demonstrating the faults of desire. 'First entangling them with the hook of desire': the sense-objects of desire are like a hook, capable of leading practitioners.
