Sixth, advanced age. Jingxi says: "'Long in the Buddha path' and so forth praises the practice: the first phrase introduces the upper [aspect]; the two phrases on seeing the principle introduce the definitive Mahāyāna; advanced age is a metaphor for the former phrase, and seeing for a long time is a metaphor for the latter phrase." "Pure and refined" (純淑): the Shangshu says, "In governing affairs, be only pure"; Kong Anguo says, "'Pure' (純) means unadulterated." The Erya says, "'Pure' means great." The Fangyan says, "'Pure' means good." For "refined" (淑), the commentary on the Classic of Poetry says, "'Refined' means beautiful, good." Some editions of the sūtra write "淳" (pure), which also means single-minded. Some write "熟" (mature), which is incorrect.
