Second, distinguishing with respect to phenomena, in two parts: first, reiterating the phenomena and asking; second, answering according to the persons, in two parts: first, for dull persons phenomena are needed; second, for sharp persons it is solely principle, in three parts: first, directly clarifying the confession of principle. Jingxi says: This gate of the unproduced repents the three paths; eradicating them in a single thought dissolves the path of suffering. Exhausting the old and forgetting the new dispels karma and defilements. If one can extinguish the old, one does not create the new; since one does not create the new, how could one repeat the old? A single kṣaṇa is called old and called new: failing to repent and falling into error is immediately called old. If one repents and the transgression is extinguished, exhausting the old and forgetting the new, when the new transgression is removed, what new could there be? Thus there is no falling away, and both new and old are forgotten.
