Second, from "infant" downward, distinctly explaining the illness and infant [practices], which has two parts: first, indicating what they arise from. Manifesting identity with minor good is called "infant"; manifesting identity with having evil is called "illness practice." Identifying with good is to bestow joy; identifying with evil is to eradicate suffering. Hence these two functions derive from loving-kindness and compassion. Therefore, previously Jingxi said that function again points back to cause. For this reason, sometimes noble practice is taken as the cause of self-benefit and heavenly practice as the effect of self-benefit, while pure practice is converting others in the cause and infant and illness practices are converting others in the effect; thus, relying on loving-kindness and compassion, there are the two practices. That pure practice applies to both cause and effect has already been briefly clarified above.
