Second, with respect to bodhisattvas abiding in inconceivable wisdom. Regarding "abiding in the wisdom of the inconceivable" and so forth: if the initial mind does not understand that a single thought is replete with the three thousand, all being empty, provisional, and middle, mutually pervading self and other, from what could fractional true wisdom develop? Directing my words to future students: you should apply your minds diligently. In the past, the Governor of Kuaiji, Meng Yi, served the Buddha with meticulous sincerity. Lord Xie said to him: "Attaining the Way must require the karma of wisdom. Your Honour's birth in heaven should be before Lingyun, but attaining Buddhahood will certainly be after Lingyun." Yi deeply resented this. Therefore, abandoning one's body three times a day is not as good as upholding four lines, simply because the karma of wisdom is able to transcend birth and death. Having encountered the secret essentials, you should apply yourselves to cultivating the mind; do not merely recite empty words to boast grandly of the perfect and wondrous, for like a parrot mimicking speech, the benefit will be quite remote.
