三世佛經，立名有二：一名字不轉、二隨佛世異。如過去二萬日月燈明佛說大乘經，名妙法蓮華；現在釋迦，同有斯號，此經名字不轉。二者隨佛出世，名字不同。如十二部中伊帝目多伽經，拘留秦佛出世之轉名甘露穀，拘那含佛為法鏡，迦葉佛時名分別空，釋迦興世稱為契經。蓋是適緣不同，故名隨世異也。

Regarding the sūtras of the buddhas of the three periods of time, the establishing of their titles has two forms: first, the name does not change; second, it varies according to the buddha's era. For instance, in the past, twenty thousand Candrasūryapradīpa Buddhas expounded the Mahāyāna sūtra named Saddharmapuṇḍarīka; in the present, Śākyamuni has the identical title; in this sūtra, the name does not change. Second, the name varies in accordance with the appearance of the buddha in the world. For instance, among the twelve divisions [of scripture], the Itivṛttaka Sūtra was called the 'Amṛta Granary' when Krakucchanda Buddha appeared in the world, the 'Dharma Mirror' under Kanakamuni Buddha, 'Distinguishing Emptiness' at the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, and when Śākyamuni arose in the world, it was called a 'Sūtra' (sūtra-piṭaka). This is merely adapting to different conditions, and hence the names vary according to the world.
