First, explaining the name "inconceivable" with reference to the root. It is precisely because the root is inconceivable that there is the function of the inconceivable. The root of the inconceivable is the Dharma gate of nonduality. The Dharma gate of nonduality refers to the dharmatā of all dharmas. Because the activity of the mind is cut off in the dharmatā of all dharmas, the mind cannot think [it]; because speech is extinguished, the mouth cannot discuss [it]. The fourteen chapters of the sūtra are specifically meant to disclose nonduality; hence the preceding preface states: "The original intention of Vimalakīrti manifesting illness, and the reason for Mañjuśrī inquiring about the illness, should be known as being to elucidate the root inconceivable; therefore it is named inconceivable."
