Question: Both the two vehicles and bodhisattvas enter emptiness alike with nothing to rely upon; why do śrāvakas abide in emptiness, while bodhisattvas do not realize it? Answer: The two vehicles take emptiness to be the ultimate good, and rely upon this non-reliance; therefore they abide in emptiness. Bodhisattvas do not take emptiness to be the ultimate good; knowing that emptiness is also empty, it is called the ungraspable emptiness. They do not rely upon this non-reliance, and therefore are able not to realize it. As the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā states: "One does not accept practice, nor does one accept non-practice; nor does one accept both practice and non-practice, nor neither practice nor non-practice, up to not accepting non-acceptance; this is called the vast and great function of the bodhisattva's non-accepting samādhi, not shared in common with śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas." For this reason, they are able not to realize emptiness. Furthermore, the two vehicles lack vows and practices to support emptiness, so upon entering emptiness they immediately realize it; bodhisattvas have great vows and great practices supporting emptiness, so upon entering emptiness they do not realize it.
