Examining the Essential Tenet. Question: Why explain expressing the path? Answer: Since the Buddhas and bodhisattvas have realized that the path is fundamentally neither being nor non-being, wishing to bring sentient beings to awakening, they know it is neither being nor non-being and provisionally speak of being and non-being; provisionally speaking of being and non-being in turn expresses non-being and non-non-being. The former is giving rise to function from the path; the present is opening the path by means of function. The former is the upāya capable of transforming; the present is causing beings to awaken and enter. With the being and non-being of apprehension, there is no giving rise to function from the path nor opening the path by means of function, nor is there any upāya capable of transforming or [...] leading beings back to the source. Therefore, this is the great essential tenet of failure and success.
