The commentary says: The following eight and a half verses correlate insentient things with supramundane dharmas. There are sixteen: 1. music, 2. gardens and groves, 3. flowers and fruits, 4. ponds and lotuses, 5. chariots and horses, 6. highways, 7. ornaments, 8. garments and garlands, 9. precious wealth, 10. couches and bedding, 11. food and drink, 12. bathing, 13. unguents, 14. vanquishing wealth, 15. eliminating enemies, 16. erecting banners. Here there are four. First, the sound of the Dharma is music, because it pleases the mind and spirit. Second, dhāraṇī is the garden, because it holds and sustains all practices; the Mahāyāna Dharma is the grove, because the ten thousand virtues flourish luxuriantly. Third, the thirty-seven factors of awakening are the flowers, because they will blossom into fruits; liberation, nirvāṇa, bodhi, and wisdom are the fruits, because they exist on account of the flowers. Fourth, the eight liberations are the bathing pool, because they remove defilements such as greed. 'The water of samādhi is serene and full' means that within the pool of the eight liberations there is constantly the water of samādhi, because it is unmoving. That the pool is wide while the water is confined should be contemplated in accordance with principle. The flowers of the seven purifications are always spread throughout it, like lotuses abiding in a pool. What is the bathing pool for? To remove the defilements of delusion. Defilements refer to the six defilements: harm, resentment, vexation, dissimulation, deceit, and arrogance. The seven purifications are: 1. purification of morality, 2. purification of mind, 3. purification of view, 4. purification by overcoming doubt, 5. purification by knowledge and vision of what is and is not the path, 6. purification by knowledge and vision of the practice, 7. purification by knowledge and vision of the severance of practice. Alternatively, there is a total division into thirty-three; here there are nine, opening groves, water, flowers, and the removal of defilements.
