Commentary: Here there are six phrases. The interpretation according to the principle of emptiness states: If one renounces for the sake of the conditioned and sign-bearing, one cannot destroy non-Buddhists or transcend nominal designations, up to and including being unable to depart from self and what belongs to self. If one renounces for the sake of the unconditioned and signless, one thereupon destroys non-Buddhists and departs from self and what belongs to self. The interpretation according to proper reason states: For one who renounces for the unconditioned dharma, first, due to right view, one destroys non-Buddhists; second, because the substance of dharmas transcends words, one transcends nominal designations; third, attaining great Nirvāṇa, one emerges from the mire of sensual desire; fourth, lacking attachment, one has no ties or fetters; fifth, lacking object and self, there is nothing that is grasped. The older sūtra reverses this, saying 'because there is nothing received, one departs from self and what belongs to self'.
