Commentary: From here on, the second major section subdues the mind of the two vehicles and clarifies great compassion to refute nonexistence. The two vehicles only seek self-benefit and are bound by grasping at dharmas; now, explaining the liberation through great compassion, wondrous insight, and upāya is called subduing the mind of the two vehicles and clarifying great compassion to refute nonexistence, because those attached to emptiness lack great compassion. The section has three parts: first, clarifying great compassion by observing the illness of self and others; next, after 'Why is this?', explaining the reasons; finally, after 'A Bodhisattva thus...', concluding the departure from bondage. The first part has two sub-parts: first, observing the characteristics of illness; second, giving rise to great compassion. This is the first. The illness of self and others is neither real nor definitely existent, because it is co-produced through the provisional combination of causes and conditions.
