Commentary: Below are four clauses, pairwise not the same as the two vehicles and ordinary beings. Therein are two divisions: the first two clauses are not the same as the two vehicles, and the latter two clauses are not the same as ordinary beings. These are the first two clauses. The four noble truths are the preliminary upāya. Contemplating internal realization is the correct fundamental contemplation. Inappropriately realizing the four noble truths is the practice of the two vehicles; not inappropriately realizing the four noble truths is the bodhisattva's practice. Benefiting oneself without benefiting others is called inappropriate; benefiting oneself while also benefiting others is called timely. If upon correct internal realization one immediately abandons saṃsāra, this is the practice of the two vehicles; although having correct internal realization, embracing saṃsāra is called the bodhisattva's practice.
