Commentary: (4) Praising. It has ten parts: 1. The three wisdoms are all capable of benefiting. Merely hearing this teaching is already called a great benefit, and is even able to ultimately and eternally eradicate saṃsāra, how much more so the six virtues: (1) faith and understanding; (2) receiving and holding; (3) reading; (4) reciting; (5) preaching; and (6) cultivating. The Madhyāntavibhāga-śāstra states: "Namely, writing, making offerings, giving to others, listening, opening and reading, receiving and holding, correctly expounding, chanting and reciting, as well as contemplating and cultivating." Those of the ten dharmic practices obtain a mass of merit that is immeasurable and supreme, and inexhaustible, because of ceaselessly gathering others. In this general heading, "faith and understanding" is subsumed under contemplation. In the text below there are two, making offerings and writing, which together with the preceding make nine. Below, "sympathetic joy" is perhaps "giving to others"; thus the ten practices are all complete.
