問：如經云「依智不依識」。既云三識，此那可依？答：經言不依識者，是生死識，今則不爾。今言依識者，是智之異名，名清淨識。又道前通名為識，道後轉依即是智慧未詳。

Question: As the sūtra states, 'Rely on wisdom, not on consciousness.' Since you speak of three consciousnesses, how can they be relied upon? Answer: When the sūtra says not to rely on consciousness, it refers to the consciousness of saṃsāra; here it is not so. When we speak of relying on consciousness here, it is another name for wisdom, called pure consciousness. Furthermore, prior to the path it is generally called consciousness; after the path its basis is transformed, which is wisdom, though this is not yet fully explained.
