Second, regarding the section from 'if so' below explaining the meaning of the doubt: the four Buddhas expounded the span of life in Ruciraketu's room while Ānanda was on the Numinous Vulture—how could he say 'thus have I heard'? The reply begins from 'however, although.' In the Sūtra on Repaying Kindness, the assembly asked Ānanda to be the Buddha's attendant, and Ānanda sought four vows from the Buddha: first, not to accept old robes; second, not to accept individual invitations; third, not to be like other monks [who must await permission], but to see [the Buddha] whenever needed; fourth, that sūtras he had not yet heard be preached again for him. The Buddha granted them all. Furthermore, regarding his attainment of the Buddha-awareness samādhi: the Buddha aided his power of awareness to be like the Buddha's, hence it is called Buddha-awareness. For one who is able to penetrate it naturally, he does not need it to be preached again. Now, Ānanda was born on the night the Buddha attained awakening, and became his attendant only at age twenty-five; if the sūtras prior to that can still be called 'thus have I heard' based on the two reasons mentioned above, how much more so for what was nearby in Ruciraketu's room?
